# Leave of Absence (LOA)

Leave of Absence (LOA) Definition: A LOA allows students whose academic progress and performance, or ability to otherwise function, has been seriously compromised by a mental health condition or a medical condition to take time away from HGSE without academic penalty. Student Support Services offers a place for students to think through their options, including reasonable accommodations that may allow students to avoid taking a leave of absence, in order to develop a plan that supports successful completion of their HGSE degree.

See [HGSE Student Handbook](https://www.gse.harvard.edu/students/handbook/registration-enrollment-policies#absence) for details.
