Congratulations to all HGSE Candidates for graduation!

Commencement will take place during the last week of May. The week is full of events and activities leading up to the University Commencement Exercises and the HGSE Diploma Ceremony. We encourage your participation at all events. More information will be forthcoming throughout the spring semester via the HGSE Weekly newsletter. Please note that some of the information listed here is tentative. The University Commencement website is also a good resource for information.

Accessible Accommodations for Graduates & Guests

Students can request accessible accommodations for themselves or guests attending any of the commencement week events. Please indicate so when filling out the ticket order poll. The poll will be emailed to all students via the HGSE Weekly newsletter the third week of April. Students will then be given instructions regarding coordination for accommodations.

Rain Plan

HGSE Commencement Rain Plan

Scenario #1: Light Rain showers

  • No change in plans.
  • Students will return from the yard, eat lunch and process in to the HGSE tent as usual.

Scenario #2: Heavy Rain (extreme)

  • Students will return directly to the HGSE tent in Radcliffe yard (NO PROCESSIONAL).
  • Commencement volunteers will have “picket signs” to organize students by cohort in their original seating area.
  • Faculty go directly to the stage and be seated.
  • Students will not receive diplomas alphabetically.
  • Email notifications of status reports and schedule updates wil be sent to student listserve and faculty listserve.
  • In addition to the tent seating, simulcast space will be available:
    • Askwith
    • Gutman Conference Center
    • Gutman Reading Area
    • Larsen G08
    • Larsen 106 

Scenario #3: Thunder/Lightning prior to the  start of the HGSE Diploma Ceremony

  • The HGSE Diploma Ceremony will be delayed until the thunder storm has passed.
  • Students and Faculty remain in staging locations.
  • Once the “all clear” is given, the Diploma Ceremony will begin and will be held in its entirety, with the processional. 
  • Email notifications of status reports and schedule updates will be sent to the HGSE student listserv.
  • Guests can use the classrooms and public space in Larsen, Longfellow and Gutman to congregate.  

Scenario #4: Thunder/Lightning during the HGSE Diploma Ceremony

  • The HGSE Diploma Ceremony will cease until the thunder storm has passed. 
  • Liz Thurston, Director of Student Affairs, will make the announcement from the stage for everyone to vacate the tent. 
  • Email notifications status report and schedule updates will be sent the HGSE student listserv.
  • Guests can use the classrooms and public space in Larsen, Longfellow and Gutman to congregate.
  • Once an “ all clear” is determined, the students will be asked to report to their previous seat under the tent.
    • The “all clear” is given at least 20 minutes after the last lightning strike.
  • The ceremony will continue in its entirety.
